Auto Insurance and Moving

When you are moving to a new home, you may have already taken care of a lot of details. Your boxes are packed, you have a moving company lined up and family and friends are ready to help you settle in and unpack. One thing many people neglect is what to do with their auto insurance.

Even if you are only moving a hundred miles, you will need to find out what effects your move will have on your auto insurance. Any time you move to another state, you will have to change things about your insurance. Each state has its own guidelines and procedures so when you move to a new state, do not simply assume that your old policy will cover your needs. After the move, or better yet, before you move, visit insurance agencies in your new state and ask about the differences in the policies.

It is best to set up your auto insurance quickly after you are moved. You do not want to have a lapse in coverage. If your old policy does not cover you in a new state, you need to get a new policy in place quickly so you are not driving uninsured for even one day. It is the law that you have to have insurance coverage in order to register a car. If you have no insurance, even if it is for a short period of time, you could get into quite a bit of trouble. The worst thing that could happen is a major accident leaving you financially responsible for all sorts of bills. Or you could simply get pulled over and be ticketed. Either way, going without insurance is not worth the risk.

When shopping for an insurance policy, make sure you have all of the basic liability insurance coverage required in your new state. After that, you can talk to your agent about the extras that can be added to a policy. You may want to add car rental insurance so that you can rent a car if something happens to yours, or other extra features. As long as you have all of the basics in your coverage, you should have a policy that will work for you.

If you want to find the best price in your new state, shop online or get several quotes from insurance companies in the area. When you compare the rates on the same policies, you can ensure that you are getting the best deal.
